About Us

Siop Y Gornel is run by us, Adam Ashworth and Feline Charpentier, and although neither of us come from a professional catering background, we have both been passionate about good food and cooking ever since we can remember. We were both brought up in North Wales, Feline coming from Germany when she was only two, and Adam being born here. We met while working at a local restaurant, and travelled in Europe for a few years before settling in London. After five years in the big smoke we both decided it was time to come home, and on new years day 2007 we found the perfect excuse! Siop Y Gornel had been a grocers and local shop for many years, and Meirion and his brother John, the previous owners, were looking to retire, but were desperate to see the traditions of the shop carry on. We happily promised to continue looking after the many loyal customers they had built up, as well as adding our own touch to the place. We still deliver to many of the elderly customers that have shopped there since they were small!

We have both seen too many shops in London and abroad that seem to be more focussed on profit margins and exclusivity, than quality and affordability, and so our ethos is very much about making food properly, exactly as if we were cooking at home for our friends and family, even if that means it takes longer and is not quite as cheap to make!

We both get up early, baking and making sometimes from 4 am, and then serve our many and varied customers in the shop, whether they are there for a sandwich, their weekly groceries or a spot of lunch! We also believe in supporting our local economy, with many of our customers bringing us their home-grown produce to sell on, as well as stocking the products of many locally-based small companies. We always try to keep our prices as low as possible, using the best quality ingredients we can get.

Siop Y Gornel is about good quality food, and a more traditional way of shopping, with a friendly and knowledgeable staff, who are always happy to help. Come and see for yourself!
